I believe we can choose to create change, through our thoughts and actions-or beliefs and intention, so this TED talk by Kelly McGonigal really inspires me! Kelly is Jane’s sister (whom I introduced last week)...good genes, huh? This talk has two main points: (1) how you think and how you act can transform your experience of stress, and (2) our bodies are wired for human connection and resiliency. Kelly highlights a few studies (one by Harvard) showing how our view of stress affects our bodies’ physiological response to stress: When you change your mind about stress, you can change how your body reacts to stress.
Simply put, when we interpret symptoms of stress (increased heart rate & breath) as a negative response, our blood vessels constrict which is very taxing on our bodies, especially after years of responding in such a way. However, when we are taught that those symptoms are indicators that our body is priming itself to meet a challenge and is meant to assist us, our blood vessels no longer constrict, but instead respond in a more healthy manner. Our hearts still pound, our breath still increases and we may sweat, but without the tension in our blood vessels, our physiological response very closely resembles that of someone experiencing joy or courage. Amazing, right?

Kelly also discusses how our stress response is framed for our connectedness with one another, and actually strengthens our hearts and mental resiliency. Many of us identify adrenaline as belonging to stress (we often feel it rush through our bodies during stressful situations) and oxytocin as the “love hormone,” but oxytocin is a vital player in our stress response, as well. Examining more research, Kelly draws the correlation between stress, human connection and (mental and physical) resiliency. Her TED talk is less than 14 mins - check it out below!
